How did Treebal assess the environmental impact of its eco-responsible messaging application ?

Treebal chooses Greenspector to assess the footprint of its engaged messaging service

The context :

Treebal is an instant messaging service that is helping to reforest the planet. Treebal represents an eco-responsible and ethical alternative to traditional media. Treebal called on Greenspector to validate the results of its eco-design approach implemented since the start of the project and to identify areas for improvement.

Greenspector is working with us to assess the energy impact of using Treebal, to identify areas for improvement and to drive continuous improvement.

The challenge :

The eco-design of a digital service is an ongoing process. Paying attention and considering improvements as we go along. All this is based on reliable measurement of both the most frequent functional paths and the places where people often pass, measured in lab mode but as close as possible to conditions of use. This measurement enables us to identify functional, technical, ergonomic, graphic and content improvement/simplification/correction actions based on sobriety and performance indicators. This approach also makes it possible to communicate the results obtained using a standardised measurement approach, and to work towards the goal of reducing the impact of digital technology.

The solution  :

  • Smartphone measurement campaign using Greenspector technologies. Automation of user paths, iterative execution and measurement, analysis of metrics (energy, data, etc.) by our consultants.

  • Advice and recommendations on how to take eco-design further, based on the measurements taken.

  • Carbon impact projections based on our comprehensive model

The results:

  • Treebal has been awarded the Greenspector Digital Sobriety Certificate at Bronze level for its application.

  • The results of the Treebal team’s eco-design efforts have been verified by measurements.

‘The eco-design approach was obvious from the outset of the project. We felt it was essential if we were to be consistent with the project’s vision and meet Treebal’s objective of digital and usage sobriety. Beyond Treebal, eco-design is now seen as a corporate issue, encouraging us to take the environmental aspect into account right from the start of any project’.

Greenspector expert opinion :

– What did the resource performance audit (App Scan) for the Treebal project involve?

The resource performance audit (App Scan) for the Treebal project consisted of a campaign to measure the resource consumption of the Treebal application on the Android platform in order to assess its current quality and identify the parts that consume the most resources. We took a closer look at the parts that were consuming the most resources in order to understand what the causes of this behaviour might be, and to suggest business, UX, UI and technical improvements to the client in order to aim for a more frugal and efficient application.

– What important points did the Greenspector solution highlight?

The measurement campaign we carried out enabled us to highlight the consumption linked to each of the functional areas and thus to underline the consumption linked to media sharing (GIFs and photos). Given the consumption associated with these functions, targeted improvements to the business needs of these areas (e.g. the size of the images required), the design of these areas (e.g. limiting the user path to the essentials in order to limit network exchanges), and the technical implementation will have a strong impact on the application for very limited adaptation efforts. We have also been able to position the efficiency and sobriety of the application launch in terms of performance and energy consumption. Design suggestions have therefore been put forward to make this compulsory step for the user quicker and with less impact on the battery, an important improvement for a first impression of the application.
