Bruxelles Environnement - Ecobuild

How to integrate ecodesign into a public website redesign and measure results over time.

Case study

Mission context

As part of its digital transformation, Bruxelles Environnement wanted to make its showcase website more sustainable, integrating digital sobriety from the redesign phase.

The project follows a lifecycle logic (manufacturing, use, end of life) and the regional Responsible Digital dynamic led with Paradigm.

The ecodesign approach was formalised from the specification: methodology, objectives, best practice annexes and hosting-related criteria.

Project team feedback

"We requested an audit of graphic mockups before development to adjust the most impactful choices. We wanted to act early, without compromising user experience."

Implementation

How frugality was maintained over time

After mockup audit, close support (2 days per 3-week sprint) helped prioritise key actions and guide the most frugal technical choices.

An initial benchmark on 30 pages of the old site served as reference. Equivalent pages on the new site were then measured daily to drive corrections and verify objectives were met.

The project shows that success depends on anticipation, clear governance of roles and continuous tracking involving all stakeholders.

Operational advice

Key takeaways

  • Integrate ecodesign from ideation, not only at development.
  • Train teams and clarify responsibilities before kick-off.
  • Objectify results with an environmental budget and regular measurements.
  • Accept schedule trade-offs to guarantee sustainable deliverable quality.

Feedback highlights that expert support accelerates team learning while securing the project trajectory.
